How to edit text in a PSD without Photoshop

Open the PSD in PhotoCraft, select the text layer with the Type tool, and retype it — unless the text was rasterized, in which case it is pixels, not text.

For PhotoCraft 0.10.0. Keep the original file and check layers, fonts and the saved or exported result before relying on a complex PSD.

Open the PSD, pick the Type tool, and click the text you want to change. If the text layer is still real text, PhotoCraft puts you in edit mode; if it was rasterized, you are looking at pixels and need a different approach. Version reference: 0.10.0.

How do I find the text layer?

Open the PSD (File → Open — full steps in opening a PSD without Photoshop). In the Layers panel, text layers show a text marker. Select a layer and the canvas highlights its contents; the layer name often matches the text.

How do I change the text?

  1. Select the Type tool (T).
  2. Click the text on the canvas. If it becomes editable, the existing text is selected — type the replacement.
  3. Press Escape to commit, then check the wording, size and position at a comfortable zoom.

The layer keeps its original font, size and color unless you change them. This differs from adding brand-new text: here you are editing what the designer wrote.

What if the fonts are missing?

PhotoCraft substitutes missing fonts with what it has. The layout may shift — line breaks, widths and centering can all move. Check the edited block carefully, and consider whether the substituted result is acceptable for your use. Keep the original PSD as the master; save your edit as a new file.

Why is some PSD text not editable?

Because it is not text anymore:

  • Rasterized text is pixels. Clicking it with the Type tool does nothing — you would need to re-create the text layer, match the style by eye, and remove the old pixels.
  • Flattened documents have everything on one layer; there is no separate text to edit.
  • Clipped or heavily styled text may partially survive. Test before promising a client a quick edit.

If the text is rasterized and the font is unavailable, the honest options are: re-typeset with a close built-in font, or go back to whoever has the original document and fonts.

After editing, save a copy

Use File → Save As to write a new PSD so the original stays untouched, then reopen it to confirm the edited text survived. The full verification workflow is in save and export.
